Review

It's a shame that people are rating this movie so high. I registered just to put some sense into IMDb. I actually don't believe in the ratings of this site anymore. Possible explanation for a high rating is that people are paid to rate the movie or most people think they are geniuses if they tell their friends that they love a sci-fi mind-blowing movie even though that movie actually doesn't make sense. I love Nolan but he dropped the ball on this one. This has potential but he created a mess out of it. A lot of scientific inconsistencies, useless characters, messy plots. One of the most overrated films ever. Let's bring back some credibility in this site

Watched 2001 space od. instead. How can this film get a higher score on IMDb than a classic proper sci film and not some family drama stretched out and a bit of futuristic spice? I can only think this gets such a high rating due to viewers not seeing old films and being won over by modern day bandwagons to jump on. Also the lead character is so wooden. He acts like a 2 by 4. And he mumbles his stiffly delivered bits. This would not matter in a proper sci-fi film but here in this melodrama masquerade it does matter. Or really it doesn't matter. This is over rated tripe. This is the movie that proves what many people by now have already realized: People are being payed to write 10 stars fake reviews! Let me tell you this: This movie is really NOT that great!

First, it's too long. It takes one hour just for the space mission to start. It's slow paced and VERY sentimental, or, in other words, most of it is boring. I'm not an English native speaker, but my English is not bad either. I have no problems watching movies in English, and yet it was very hard for me to understand the main character's mumbling in his farmer accent. All other actors spoke properly, except him, the most important one.

The plot is not very logical: Planets just in front of a giant black hole?! Yes, this must be the place to live everybody is dreaming of. Imagine your colleagues in the space station would say to you: "OK, we're now ready to fly down to that planet. You wait here. Don't worry, we'll come back soon, in... some YEARS!" You'd probably smile and say: "Wonderful! OK, go now!", right? One day they come back and are probably surprised to see you haven't committed suicide because of depression, even though you waited 23 years (!!!) for them. You must be the most patience man in the entire Universe. And again a female "scientist" who looks like a model and behaves like an amateur. An obligatory part of every sci-fi movie nowadays.

This is just to give you an idea. There is much more, so read the other negative reviews. Good night. And good luck. First, about the pain, which is mostly due to the sound. I don't know how many times we're in a rocket ship blasting off somewhere with everything shaking, the cameras jiggling, the astronauts grimacing, and the sound track roaring, screeching, thundering, blasting the eardrums—I really did have to plug my ears by the end of the movie. Add to that the so- called music, which consisted mostly of even higher mountains of noise, mostly produced by a big pipe organ pumping out its gargantuan decibels in the form of a few simple chords—hardly music, merely a musical instrument adding to the overall accumulation of noise. I don't think anybody should be credited with creating "music" for this film.

As for the stupidity, I was lured into the theatre by publicity claiming that the film had got the science right, or at least the graphic representation of a wormhole and black hole. Well, the graphics may have been right, but they were pretty standard stuff as far as eye candy goes, hardly worth the price of the ticket. What about the science? Maybe it was correct on every point, or on most points, or only on a few points—who knows? Only someone with degrees in quantum mechanics and astrophysics would be able to judge. For the general audience (obviously, the audience the film was aimed at), the science talk came across as sheer gobbledygook. There was no effort to explain the ideas for the public. The jargon was just spat out here and there with the purpose of raising a smokescreen for the current plot point. Very annoying.

I wanted to enjoy this film. I hated not liking it, knowing how much money and effort went into making it. But by the time we got to the last 20 minutes or so, I'd had enough and had to fight the urge to walk out. In fact, I did get out of my seat and watched the last 10 minutes or so from the back of the auditorium near the exit door.

OK, my first IMDb review. I REALLY wanted to like this movie. I love Nolan's work and I'm a science fiction fan. Sadly within an hour I was wondering if I could stick out another two hours. The actors are all great, and they get the few stars I'm willing to give it. I will admit that directing a big production like this is not for the faint-hearted and I'll give Nolan points for that. However, the story is so poorly constructed it just piles on frustration after frustration. Other reviewers on here have described the litany of illogical errors. I haven't read all 900 reviews but we have long known that black holes EAT stars and planets, and when they do, they give off titanic bursts of gamma and x-ray radiation that would sterilize entire regions of a galaxy. I'm willing to suspend my disbelief in service of just enjoying a movie, but when the entire premise is to find a more suitable home for human life and then you choose a planet apparently orbiting a black hole, well that just goes from suspension to just outright disbelief. If Batman had chosen to just use his magic freeze gun to stop the nuke in Gotham I think most Batman fans would have been groaning. That's the way someone like me feels about lazy plot devices like this.

There is also WAY too much unnecessary dialogue in this movie, the superb cast are wasted saying clichéd and hackneyed lines. The whole punchline of the "ghost" you could see coming in the first hour, so you just ended up wondering how they would get there over the next 109 minutes. I'm sorry but I thought the music was intensely annoying and was just designed to jar you awake every half an hour. Then there is the whole "Don't open the airlock! Don't open the airlock!" I was sitting there thinking "Just open the damn airlock and get it over with." Everything was either entirely predictable or completely illogical. Floating frozen clouds? Seriously? The least they could do was have Tinkerbell fly onto the set and explain how that could happen. I guess because Cameron got away with nicking Roger Dean's floating mountains in Avatar, Nolan thought no one would complain. But let's face it Avatar wasn't exactly trying to be clever and that's where this goes over the line. If you're going to delve into the BIG questions like Quantum Mechanics, Relativity and black holes you set yourself up to be measured by a whole new set of rules. Nobody complains about Harry Potter flying on a broomstick but have him try and explain it using Einstein and you're going to be in a mess of trouble.

As for the reviews comparing it to 2001, the only things it has that are the same is that it is set in space and there is a wormhole. Absolutely nothing else is the same and frankly it is an insult to compare this to Kubrick's masterpiece. And when people say, "get over it, it's just a movie" they're rewarding someone for being lazy. Just like Gravity this had all the elements to be a masterpiece if they'd just bothered to talk to a few more people in the science community besides Kip Thorne; who apparently understands the workings of the universe all except for the black hole which is Hollywood.

Review

I saw "The Empire Strikes Back" first when it came out in the Special Edition. I didn't expect to like it, so you can imagine my surprise. The entire film blew me away. I was amazed by the emotional impact. Princess Leia became a role model, Han Solo became an object of lust. I knew before seeing it, I wanted a career in movies, but this one helped me make up my mind for certain. I used to have over 10 different favorite movies, including West Side Story and Rebel Without A Cause, but I found that Empire left me breathless every time. In my opinion, The Empire Strikes Back is the best cinematic experience in history, and will remain the best.

Even better than the first one, this movie is fun! Better special effects and bigger adventures and to top it all: the mother of all soap opera plots!(And I bet EVERYONE knows what I'm talking about) Unlike the first movie, this one is not a stand-alone movie and it connects directly to the third (or should I say sixth?) and final part. You still get the feeling of a complete story and it's f-u-n. Lucas is a genius. Great characters, great worlds of wonder... Wow. Oh, and make sure you watch the special edition! Just buy the special edition trilogy. I agree I really enjoy the Empire Strikes Back. Out of all the 4 Star Wars films I think that it is the second best of the lot. what annoys me is how unanimously most reviewers automatically point out that Return of the Jedi is the worst of the series.

(Many even say that the childish film, TPM is better than ROTJ???!!huh???!!!!!!) To be quite frank, WHY? After reading surprising reviews from critics and fans alike I feel like it is necessary to point out why ROTJ is better than ESB:
  1. First of all, except for the "I am your father" it was not as emotional and sentimental as Return of the Jedi. Sure the "I am your father" statement was a surprise, but I get tears in my eyes when Luke reveals to his sister the truth about how they are siblings. But even that pales compared to the last 40 minutes of the movie which is an extremely dark confrontation between Luke/Darth Vader/Palpatine. Darth Vader's final redemption is just the most touching/meaningful scene out of all the Star Wars movies. And the "I am your father" statement just does not have as much sting as "Father... Father I will not leave you.." and then Anakin dies.. or even "You have failed your highness, I am a Jedi like my father before me."
  2. Has anyone ever thought how silly it was for Luke to learn how to become a near Jedi after one afternoon and nearly defeat Vader? Come on, he did not even know how to handle a lightsaber before he met Yoda.. All of a sudden he is doing all those impressive flips and swashbuckling moves? Give me a break. Or how about knowing how to use the force to get to Bespin? How? A Jedi that can barely use the force to lift pebbles. Hello?
  3. This movie was slower paced. I must agree that some of the sequences in the asteroid belt seemed to drag at times. Jedi, (the longest of the three) on the other hand gripped you for all its 133 minutes.
  4. Where is the big space battle? I like to see spaceships getting blown up... Is this "Star Wars" or "Star Trek"? On the other hand, the Space Battle in ROTJ is widely considered The Greatest Space Battle Ever Filmed.
  5. The Battle of Endor was great because it was ironic and unexpected. Everyone says how much they hate the Ewoks but the charming thing about this battle was that the Imperials were supposed to win since Palpatine had foreseen it. I was in turmoil after the line--"Your friends over there on the Endor moon are walking into a trap.. It (the shield generator) is quite safe from your pitiful band...An entire legion of my best troops await them.. Oh! I think that the shield generator will be quite operational when your friends arrive.." After this I thought how could the rebels possibly win when the Empire had the upper hand. When the Ewoks came and surprised everyone I was breathtaken! I always get emotional when I see the underdogs take on a much more powerful foe!
Empire Strikes Back is a great movie in its own right But.. Special kudos goes to the greatest film in cinematic history-- Episode 6:Return of the Jedi. When I first saw this movie as youngster, I thought it was good, but i was into the Action Packed Star Wars and Return of the Jedi better, but now i have a different outlook of it. Now it my fav of the series and probably of all movies. It has deep meaning to it. The scenes with the all-knowing Yoda and Luke. There also were some good action sequences on Hoth, the Icy planet. But the duel between Vader and Skywalker is one of the best sword fights EVER! If there is anyone out there who is reading this and hasn't seen this movie or Starwars, then see them all NOW. As a matter of fact, u can probably bye them for a cheap price as a set at your local Best Buy or where ever.

The Empire Strikes Back is just a notch down from A New Hope, but still an excellent film in the trilogy. After the Death Star was destroyed, the Rebellion was chased from their secret base and relocated to a bunch of different planets over three years, until they're finally settled down on the ice planet of Hoth. Darth Vader, obsessed with finding Luke Skywalker has sent probe droids across the galaxy in order to find him and his friends. This film is very action packed, ranging from the AT-AT battle to the chase in the asteroid field. The acting is quite better than the first go around, especially from Mark Hamill, and the love scenes between Han and Leia are excellent. Darth Vader is at his most evil in this film, choking people to death who fail him. His lightsaber duel with Luke at the end is ten times better than between him and Obi Wan in the original and the point where Darth tells Luke who he REALLY is is shocking, even when you know what happens. To sum it up: The Rebellion is defeated, Luke abandons his training, Han is captured and taken to Jabba The Hutt and Luke gains a daddy and loses a hand. Excellent film in the series.

Review

Hi,

This movie make me one time more disappointed about super heroes movie. Marvel and DC have so much good stories to explore and to give a good twist with to make it realistic and touching, how much difficult is to make a good super hero movie?

I can't understand how people can give some money to see this. I'm 100% agree with Lyre comments. How is it possible?

US movies are passing a bad time like they no more care about a good plot and invest all the money using all this technology to compensate the lack of substance of their work. This movie could not be more illustrative about what I'm saying: everybody knows Superman story, why anybody care to give it a twist in order to captivate spectator mind. All these inconsistencies are ridiculous.

This movie is a disgrace for all movies, but isn't the only one of its kind.
Spoilers ahead.

Not even remotely kidding. Not really caring about the comics, all I wanted to watch was a good movie. Something like the Batman reboot. I don't mind if it follows the canon or not, or whatever.I didn't even care if it was Oscar potential. All I asked for is to be entertained.

Nope. Didn't happen at all.

Sure, the SFX are great. And the new suit is OK, I guess. Other than that... what on earth did I watch? I waited and waited. The first half was slow and boring, but I thought it'd build up to a terrific climax. As many pointed out, I wondered about the plot holes (how did Superman know he had to go north? How did Louis Lane fall in love with Superman? How did he do all the amazing feats of strength while near the ship? Why didn't Superman take the battle outside Metropolis? The list goes on and on), but didn't care that much.

What I did care about was - the second half was just explosions and nothing more. Violence, destruction, and that's it. The Avengers was fun because the characters had someone to talk to while mayhem happened around them. Batman was interesting because he had Alfred and the Comissioner around. Superman has.. nothing. All we see are loud crashes everywhere. The action goes by so fast you don't really see a thing.

The characters are completely forgettable. Even Laurence Fishburne is a bore.

I really can't believe this movie had something to do with Christopher Nolan. Batman begins is leaps and bounds better than this movie. I really wanted to like it, but in the end it's just as forgettable as Superman Returns. And that's a really bad thing.

It seems Christopher Reeve will forever be THE Superman, after all.
This may have a small spoiler - depends on what you call a spoiler!

I'm not a critic - just a girl who grew up on Superman movies, and has loved all of them....even Returns, although it wasn't my favorite one. I had been anxiously awaiting the arrival of this movie since 2011, when I found out it was being produced by Nolan. When I left the theater I felt very much like I had watched a Transformers movie, and not a Superman movie. This was a summer blockbuster special effects movie and not much more. I thought the actors were great (although I did think Zod was miscast) The writing was fine, for what it was, and it seemed like they were trying to give some depth and character development in the first half of the movie, but then....nothing... except grand explosions and superfluously long battle scenes.

By far, the biggest disappointment to me was the Clark-Lois relationship, in which there was no chemistry, (they didn't take the time to build any - although the actors could have portrayed it splendidly, I think), no suspense, and basically no romance - although I THINK the movie wanted us to believe they were in love.... That's how badly done it was, I couldn't tell if they were in love or not. I went from thinking "This is a good start to a friendship" to "they just kissed, why did they do that?"

Lastly, what's up with Lois shouting Clark's name while he's wearing his Superman tights? OK - seriously, they should have known better than that.

This film isn't even close to the same level as the Batman Begins trilogy. Just too much action and not enough character development and relationship.

Essentially, they turned it into a "guy's movie." As someone who's not interested in explosions, I got quite bored and a bit depressed with the last half of this movie. Richard Donner still has my vote, by far.
I have to agree with the critics on this one. Man Of Steel just doesn't compare to the original Superman films.
  1. The movie is all about special effects. They are too fast and jerky which makes the action scenes very hard to follow. Was it really necessary to have so much destruction? There are too many spaceships and scenes in space and what was with the laser eyes? They were more fire than laser....ridiculous!
  2. The majority of the acting is amateur. Russell Crowe is average, Amy Adams (Lois Lane) should be put in a soap opera, Henry Cavil as Superman has no screen presence whatsoever and Michael Shannon as General Zod was awful.
  3. Where was the hero factor? In Superman, didn't you all get tingles and goose bumps when he first turns into Superman, catches Lois and then the helicopter?
Superman films should be Cert U or PG. All I can manage to give it is 3/10 folks....
Why do Directors today feel we the public need 1 hour of loud continuous destruction scenes???? The movie started out great with interesting character building and story line. The last half was the same old been there done that green screen video game action. The director really missed a great opportunity to make a film with some real SUPERMAN story punch. Instead, he pandered to the easy green screen visual assault on the senses with sound so loud, the dialogue was lost. Had the ending action sequence been less over the top, I would definitely want to see this movie again. Knowing this, I doubt I will ever want to watch again. Get a new director.

Review

This is the movie that should have been done first off. The way it turned out, while watching, you know what is going to happen, having seen the story-line in the original UNDERWORLD. And that's a shame, because I can quite imagine how I would have freaked out normally at the sight of Sonja getting burnt to a crisp, the queen or the modern martyrs of female movie characters. As you can guess, I am a Rhona Mitri fan, especially because of PARTY OF FIVE, even if her character was grossly underdeveloped there, and NIP/TUCK to a lesser extent, because there her character regressed into a shambles. So, despite not really having seen her in anything worthy of her, I am a Rhona Mitra fan (and no, I haven't seen her in FHM magazines either) you know why? It's the age-old RavenGlamDVDCollector thing... that foxy face! She is just beautiful.

I normally avoid the kind of slasher movie where girls get killed for the heck of it left, right, front and center, and it was a total bummer to have the lead lady killed off about 80% through the movie, but this film is just marvelously done in a most astounding way, including the death scene. It is just absolutely breathtaking. It cements Sonja as an unforgettable character.

Actually, Sonja's more to my liking than that cold-as-ice deathly Selene. I'm not saying anything at all against Kate Beckinsale, no way, Selene is a scripted character and she is scripted that way to be played that way. But to those of you criticizing Rhona's Sonja as light- weight compared to Kate's Selene, I do not agree. I think everybody will concur that two superb stars were chosen for the two female leads.

(Apologies to you seriously-into-gore and CGI mayhem dudes, I'm just a Rhona Mitra fanboy!)

P.S. I should also mention that Michael Sheen and Ben Nighy outdid themselves. That is some compliment from a guy who is obsessed only with actresses. Take it as a feather in your caps, guys.

Whew, after the trilogy set, gee, had my fill of wolfy violence! And dark blue screens! :)
Kate Beckinsale was quite clearly the best thing the Underworld franchise had going for it. Making an Underworld movie without her was either very bold or very stupid. Happily, with Rise of the Lycans, that decision proved to be more bold than stupid. Yes, Beckinsale is missed. No, this movie is not as much fun as the first installment in the series. But there are enough good things here to make this movie a worthy addition to the saga. It may fall short of the original but it is at least on par with, probably even a touch better than, Evolution. And Evolution had Beckinsale in it so that's saying something!

Beckinsale is not here because this is a prequel, her character of Selene has yet to enter the story. This movie takes us back to the origin of the Lycans, the werewolves who retain the ability to transform back into human form. Lucian, who we know so well from movie number one, is the first Lycan. And that's good news because that means Michael Sheen is back. In the first film, told from a vampire's point of view, Lucian was the bad guy. Here we see things through Lycan eyes, Lucian is the hero. And Sheen gives a very powerful performance, he is indeed an inspiring hero. But if we are meant to sympathize with the Lycans in this movie, and we clearly are, who's the bad guy? Welcome back vampire elder Viktor, played as in the first film by Bill Nighy. Viktor, as any fan of the saga knows, is quite a nasty piece of work. And Nighy plays the part with gleeful relish. This is one of the hammiest performances you'll ever see, laughably over-the-top. But for this kind of film it actually kind of works. We're talking about vampires and werewolves here, let's not take things too seriously.

Sheen and Nighy draw most of the attention. The other key role goes to Rhona Mitra. She plays Viktor's daughter, Sonja, who is of course in a forbidden romance with Lucian. We know how that story will play itself out but it's interesting seeing the journey to that story's end. Mitra gives a solid performance, though certainly not as memorable as Sheen or Nighy. She's obviously meant to be this movie's Beckinsale and while not as great as Kate she holds her own. Even if we already know much of the story heading in this film still manages to entertain and spring a surprise or two along the way. In some ways though the film does disappoint. The scale of the thing seems rather small, almost entirely contained within the vampire fortress. The action is, after what we've seen in the first two films, overly familiar and repetitive. And oh so dark. Yes, vampire stories have to unfold at night but honestly this film is shot in such a dimly lit way it's often impossible to tell what's going on. And there is the sense that the movie ends just when it should be getting good. We see the rise of the Lycans, the start of the war we've heard so much about. And then it's over. There's so much more we already know about the story that we could have seen on screen. The movie could have gone further. We could have seen some more of that war. We could have seen that famous confrontation between Lucian and Kraven. And of course we could have seen Selene. This movie leaves a lot on the table. Though if the worst thing you can say about a movie is that it leaves you wanting more that's not so bad.
Have you watched the first 'Underworld?' If you have, you may well remember a bit of talking about a female vampire who fell in love with a male werewolf (sorry, 'lycan'). Well, that three minute monologue from the original has been turned into an hour and a half story. And this is it.

So, if you've seen the first film, there's nothing here that will come as a surprise. But that doesn't mean it's a bad film. For a start (despite being made by a different director) it has the same look and feel of its two predecessors and most of the appropriate original cast members return. Special mention to Bill Nighy who steals every scene as the evil vampire 'Victor.' There's action, romance and plenty of mutated wolves mixing it with medieval vampires. If that's what you're looking for (and, if you like the other Underworld movies then you probably do) then this should tick all boxes.

However, behind all the action and gore is a strong romantic story - your typical 'forbidden love' debacle between two clans, in some crazy way, almost like Romeo and Juliet. Despite the Underworld series all featuring this as a central theme, it continues the tradition of being 'Twilight' for the older generation (who definitely don't like their vampires with big hair and sparkly skin).

Warning: this Underworld movie does NOT feature Kate Beckinsale (not unless you could the five seconds at the end). I've seen a fair few people moaning because it doesn't. You have been warned (although Rhona Mitra isn't that bad as a replacement in my opinion!).
Normally the last in the trilogy of the Underworld saga takes us back to the time Victor (Bill Nighy) reign his world and saves the baby Lucian (Michael Sheen). But Lucian as a lycan falls in love with the daughter of Victor Sonja (Rhona Mitra). Of course this can't happen and Lucian is punished for that particular fact. Victor looks toward Lucian as his son and keeps him alive. But Lucian wants Sonja to help him to free the slaves of the vampires, the lycans. Big love between the two of them but Victor doesn't want it to happen. From there on you will see what you saw in part 1 and 2 in the flashbacks. This is a prequel and explains all your questions.

It's the darkest entry with an excellent score and of course Bill and Michael carry this flick. Rhona is a copy of Kate Beckinsale only to be seen at the end of Rise Of The Lycans. It should be so because we all know that Victor killed Selene's parents and saved her because she looked like Sonja. And it does.

The effects are again excellent, maybe the only complain is the use of CGI for blood here and there. For me this was the strongest entry so far in the Underworld franchise.

Gore 1/5 Nudity 1/5 Effects 4/5 Story 4/5 Comedy 0/5
I kind of thought this movie sucked. The plot was pretty bad. Lucian, whose half human and half wolf, is a slave of the head vampire, Viktor. He's also having an affair with Viktor's daughter, Sonja, which of course is forbidden. Then there was something about Lucian making a key to unlock his collar, how did he make a key to do that? And way, that is forbidden, so Viktor punishes him with beatings. Lucian and some other prisoners escape and come back to the castle to rescue the others and take Sonja with him.

The special effects were not good. They were shown without much light, making it hard to even tell what was happening. The blood was so fake. And the transformations from human to wolf were not creative. And why didn't the werewolves fight the vampires as a werewolf instead of human form. And the vampires never transformed into anything or even use their powers. It was silly.

Review

Men in Black was one of my favorite Hollywood blockbusters of the '90s. Watching this movie now, it has lost none of its charm. You have to love these two stars. Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith are amazing. They are a great duo on screen. These two are awesome and you can tell they enjoyed working with each other. This movie is explosive, fast paced, thoughtful, humorous, original, and even at times wise. Final point, get this movie, you won't be disappointed.

As the movie progresses you learn more about how the MIB work through the eyes of agent J(Will Smith) who is a new recruit. Who does a great job with his role while adding a bit of humor into the mix. Agent K(Tommy Lee Jone) is the really serious one of the two and takes his job very very seriously and is always serious. But the pair works well in this movie. Overall this is a fun sci-fi movie that doesn't take itself too seriously and for the most part it works.

One of the best science fiction action comedies ever made. The special effects are great - believable (realistic) instead of being cartoonish. The story is interesting - and it's easy to get pulled into it from the beginning. And there's plenty of action and comedy to keep you watching. It's one of the best films of it's kind.

If you enjoyed Men in Black then there are a few other comedies with science fiction themes that you might enjoy as well: "Mars Attacks!", "Spaceballs", and "Galaxy Quest". If you like the quirky CIA/FBI in Men in Black then you might like similar comedy films dealing with laughable governmental/police characters such as "The Naked Gun", "Spies Like Us" or "Dragnet".

This is one of the best movies ever. Not just because it came out in 1997, the best year ever, but because There is comedy, drama, action, and serious points all blended into one. You literally don't know whats going to happen next in this movie if you've never seen it before. Tommy Lee Jones does a great job of acting in this movie. He played a role where he was supposed to be serious most of the time, and he always did a good job at keeping a stale face to convince you that his character really was a strict person that always tried to get the job done and then leave. He reminds me of a person that wakes up on a gloomy Monday morning and they just want to get through the day.

They don't talk, they don't smile, they just do what they have to do until they can go home and fall right back into bed. Most people don't feel like this throughout the whole day, but Tommy Lee Jones made K seem like he had that feeling for most of the Movie. Will Smith did his usual thing, making people laugh in moments when you expect it to be serious, and being serious when you would think there would be a joke around the corner. It's good that one of the two stars was Will, because only a year after The Fresh Prince stopped airing new episodes, will smith is back in a movie that his fans simply can't not like. The two stars worked perfectly together, and I like how at the end, J kind of gets past K's shell that has kept so many people away. It's the unpredictability, and the blend of different genre's that makes this a great movie.

Before I start, I'm going to say that Men in Black is by far a hundred times better than Men in Black II; and if i were to review Men in Black II, it would be a positive review, but it wouldn't be as well reviewed as the first one, which i am doing now. Science-Fiction comedies are very good to watch - a lot of them are very funny with great looking aliens and well-done, funny, good-to-watch, developed characters. Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones play Agents J and K; and rightfully so, because they're absolutely great as them. They are the men in black! They're pitted against the ultimate villain - a giant, Alien cockroach that crash lands into a farm and goes inside a farmer (ends up taking over him) and whose wife ends up fainting after he pulls his face back....which is weirder than it sounds. HAHA.

Men in Black is a wonderful and enjoyable science-fiction comedy with great fantasy, sci-fi, aliens, comedy and more, you'll not stop laughing. Such an incredible film - and a helluva lot of different aliens appear in it; Mikey, in particular, is awesome.

Ah, the 90's. A decade that started with the dying gasps of the 1980's, before becoming its own beast entirely. This is perfectly reflected in its media and film. In particular, the absolutely fun, fast and funny action-packed Sci-Fi comedy "Men in Black", directed by stylish filmmaker Barry Sonnenfeld (from a script by Ed Solomon) and starring Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith.

Smith stars as James Edwards, an NYPD officer who uncovers a strange and possibly extra-terrestrial threat one night while chasing down a perp on the streets. Impressed with James' feat of chasing down an alien on foot, an enigmatic and mysterious agent known only as "Agent K" (Tommy Lee Jones) recruits Edwards into the super-secretive agency known as the "Men in Black" (or "MIB")- a group of men and women who monitor, evaluate and police alien life on the planet Earth. Though the two men of different generations and personalities clash at first (in a way reminiscent of many buddy-comedies), they are forced to work together to stop an insect-like creature (portrayed by Vincent D'Onofio), who is seeking a mysterious artifact trapped on Earth, in a plot which could lead to the destruction of the planet.

This is one of those perfect storms of a talented cast with great chemistry, a good script that flows at just the right pace, fantastic production qualities and a fine director to bring it all together. It's an absolute joy to watch even now, 15 years later.

Smith and Jones are perfect in their roles: Smith as an eager, loud, almost brash young man who is unconventional by the standards of most establishments, and Jones as a semi-weary older, grumpier father-like figure trying to train younger partner. They work together with an amazing chemistry and come off as one of the most likable pairings in recent cinematic history. And their back-and-forth does provide fodder for many great jokes. D'Onofrio is a lot of fun as a slightly over- the-top villain who has stolen the skin of a farmer, which he wears like a suit, causing all sorts of fun physical gags and eccentricities. Rip Torn as the head of MIB is silly fun. And supporting roles by the likes of Linda Fiorentino, Tony Shalhoub and a voice-over role by "Johnny 5" himself, Tim Blaney, are perfect.

The script by Ed Solomon is a lot of fun. He is able to find a happy balance between character development, action, comedic bits and the more broad Sci-Fi elements. It's an admirable script (especially compared to some of his past work), and while it may not do anything too daring, it's very solid and tightly constructed.

Sonnenfeld's direction is top-notch. The visual style he built in films such as the two "Addams Family" flicks and his own quirky sense of humor are allowed to run wild. Sonnenfeld creates a great quirky, fun yet still slightly serious atmosphere that works perfectly in a film such as this. He was the ideal man for the job, and I don't think there is any other director who could have quite handled this film with as much class as he did.

The rest of the production, including some amazing visual effects and awe-inspiring creatures created by Rick Baker. Set and costume design is top-notch. Danny Elfman's score is an absolute funky blast of memorable themes and fun action beats. This is an astonishingly well put-together film.

The only real complaint I have is that the film does feel very basic at times in terms of structure. (And evidently it was subject to some big editing in post production to simplify the story) And a part of me does wish it took more chances with its material and premise.

But regardless, the acting is great, the production incredible and the storytelling first class. I can't complain too much because everything is so well-done. (Although the first sequel is definitely a film I will complain about in a later review)

TRON: Legacy (2010) Full Movie HD

 watch donwload

To the sad story of a father who was trapped inside a snowman for the winter ("Jack Frost"), we must now add "Tron: Legacy," where the father has been trapped inside a software program for 20 years. Yes, young Sam Flynn has grown up an orphan because his dad was seduced and abducted by a video game. Now a call comes for the young hero to join his old dad in throwing virtual Frisbees at the evil programs threatening that digital world.
This is a movie well beyond the possibility of logical explanation. Since the Tron universe exists entirely within chips, don't bother yourself about where the physical body of Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges) has been for the last two decades; it must surely have been somewhere, because we can see that it has aged. The solution I suppose is that this is a virtual world and it can do anything it feels like, but how exactly does a flesh-and-blood 20-year-old get inside it? And what does he eat?

Joseph Kosinski's "Tron: Legacy" steps nimbly over such obstacles and hits the ground running, in a 3-D sound-and light show that plays to the eyes and ears more than the mind. Among its real-world technology is a performance by Jeff Bridges as Kevin Flynn at two different ages — now, and 20 years ago. The original "Tron" was made 28 years ago, but that would have made young Sam Flynn, his son, nearly 30, which is too old for the hero in a story of this sort. The ideal age would be around 12.

In a flashback, we see Kevin, lord of a mighty software corporation, taking leave of his son as a child. At first, you think Jeff Bridges looks younger in this scene because of makeup or Botox or something, and then you realize this is Bridges' body and voice but his face has been rendered younger by special effects. They're uncanny. The use of profiles and backlighting makes the illusion adequate for this purpose. The real Bridges turns up later inside the program, whiskery and weathered, but the CGI version of younger Jeff sticks around to play Clu, a digital doppelganger he created, who now desires (you know this is coming) to control the world.

Kevin and Sam reconcile and bond. They join other cyberspace allies, notably including the beguiling Quorra (Olivia Wilde), who cyber-Kevin has apparently been fathering instead of poor orphaned Sam. Does this symbolize the ways video games can destroy real-life relationships? Just asking. I'm thinking of Quorra and Sam as a possible romantic couple, but there's the pesky problem that she is virtual, and he bleeds when he's cut — I think, although maybe not inside the program. This brings us back to a central question about "Avatar": What or who, precisely, was Neytiri falling in love with?

I'm giving this more attention than the movie does, which is just as well. Isaac Asimov would have attempted some kind of scientific speculation on how this might all be possible, but "Tron" is more action-oriented. (Personal to sci-fi fans: If "2001: A Space Odyssey" is Analog, "Tron: Legacy" is Thrilling Wonder Stories.)
The first "Tron" (1982) felt revolutionary at the time. I'd never seen anything like it. We showed it again at Ebertfest a few years ago. It was the first movie to create a digital world and embed human actors; always earlier that had been done with special effects, matte shots, optical printers, blue screen and so on. "Tron" found a freedom of movement within its virtual world that was exhilarating. The plot was impenetrable, but so what?

"Tron: Legacy," a sequel made 28 years after the original but with the same actor, is true to the first film: It also can't be understood, but looks great. Both films, made so many years apart, can fairly lay claim to being state of the art. This time that includes the use of 3-D. Since so much of the action involves quick movement forward and backward in shots, the 3-D effect is useful, and not just a promiscuous use of the ping-pong effect. It is also well-iterated. (A note at the start informs us that parts of the movie were deliberately filmed in 2-D, so of course I removed my glasses to note how much brighter it was. Dimness is the problem 3-D hasn't licked.)

A long time ago in 1984, Jeff Bridges appeared as an alien inhabiting a human body in John Carpenter's "Starman." An article in the New York Times magazine called him the perfect movie actor. He wasn't flashy; he was steadily, consistently good. Now that he has won an Oscar for "Crazy Heart" and is opening soon in "True Grit" (2010) that is still true. Here is an actor expected to (1) play himself as a much younger man, (2) play himself now, and (3) play a computer program (or avatar?), and he does all three in a straightforward manner that is effective and convincing (given the preposterous nature of the material).

Sam (Garrett Hedlund), circa 20, is well-suited to his role, somewhat resembling Bridges. Olivia Wilde makes a fragrant Quorra. In some inexplicable way, these actors and Bruce Boxleitner (Tron) and Michael Sheen (Zuse) plausibly project human emotions in an environment devoid of organic life, including their own.
The artificial world is wonderfully well-rendered, building on the earlier film's ability to bring visual excitement to what must in reality, after all, be slim pickings: invisible ones and zeroes. I soon topped off on the thrill of watching Frisbees of light being hurled, but some of the chases and architectural details are effective simply because they use sites and spaces never seen. And the soundtrack by Daft Punk has such urgent electronic force that the visuals sometimes almost play as its accompaniment. It might not be safe to play this soundtrack in the car. The plot is another matter. It's a catastrophe, short-changing the characters and befuddling the audience. No doubt an online guru will produce a synopsis of everything that happens, but this isn't like an opera, where you can peek at the program notes.

I expect "Tron: Legacy" to be a phenomenon at the box office for a week or so. It may not have legs, because its appeal is too one-dimensional for an audience much beyond immediate responders. When "2001" was in theaters, there were fans who got stoned and sneaked in during the intermission for the sound-and-light trip. I hesitate to suggest that for "Tron: Legacy," but the plot won't suffer.
